Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Medennium Phakic Refractive lens (MPL) implantation in amblyopic adult eyes with very high myopia

Setting:

Ptivate-practice: International center for Ophthalmology, Moscow, RussiaBlue Eyeâ€ Centro di Chirurgia Oculare, Milano, Italy

Methods:

Thirty two myopic eyes of 23 patients were treated for high myopic amblyopia with implantation of a silicone MPL in the posterior chamber. Mean patient age was 29.0Â±7.9 years. Manifest refraction in spherical equivalent (MR), uncorrected (UCVA) and best corrected (BCVA) visual acuity, optical biometry, intraocular pressure (IOP), AC OCT, corneal endothelial cell (CEC) loss were measured

Results:

MPL were successfully implanted in all eyes. Mean follow-up was 18.07Â±4.56 months (range 12 to 24 months). The preoperative mean refraction (spherical equivalent, SE) was -22.12Â±6.47 diopters (D). The postoperative mean refraction (SE) was -1.15Â±0.46 D at twelve months. The postoperative BCVA improved an average 4.12Â±1.36 lines over preoperative values. Development of cataracts, glaucoma, and pupil abnormalities were not demonstrated in any case during the study

Conclusions:

This study indicates that MPL implantation may be an effective surgical alternative for the correction of amblyopic adult eyes with very high myopia. An improvement in visual outcomes connected with magnification effect of having the IOL in the eye
