Assessment of corneal endothelium in patients of type II diabetes mellitus

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the corneal endothelial morphology and corneal thickness in type II diabetics with diabetic retinopathy.
Setting:
M and J Institute of Ophthalmology, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India
Methods:
The corneal endothelial structure and central corneal thickness(CCT) were evaluated in 75 eyes of type II diabetic patients which were divided into 3 groups 25 patients each. Group A was the control group with no DR, patients in group B had non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy and in group C had proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The endothelial structure i.e. cell density, average cell size, coefficient of variation of cell size, percentage of hexagonal cells and CCT were compared in case and control groups.
Results:
The endothelial cell density and hexagonality were significantly decreased in diabetics with retinopathy, while the average cell size, coefficient of variation of cell size and CCT were significantly increased.The difference in endothelial cell count in group A and B was statistically significant as compared to group C.
Conclusions:
Diabetes affects the corneal endothelium adversely. Endothelial cell density decreases with progression of diabetes. Thus, regular evaluation of corneal endothelium should be done in diabetics to prevent corneal endothelial decompensation and corneal edema.
