Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the histopathologic effect of diabetes on pterygium in patients with pterygium excision
Setting:
afyonkarahisar state hospital
Methods:
Twenty-two patients with pterygium excisional diabetes mellitus and twenty-two patients without diabetes mellitus were examined for histopathological examination in order to expose if squamous metaplasia, dysplasia inflammation, fibrinoid changes or vascularization were different in these patients.
Results:
The mean age of 44 patients included in the study was 58.7 years, of whom 54.4% female, 44.6% male. The mean age of the patients with diabetes mellitus was 53.7 years and the mean age of the patients without the diabetes mellitus was 63,6. The mean blood glucose level of patients with dm was 183 mg / dl, the mean HbA1c was 7.3, and the mean blood glucose level of dm - patients was 92 mg / dl. There were no statistically significant differences in the expectorated pterjium tissues due to squamous metaplasia, dysplasia, fibrinod changes, inflammation and vascularization.
Conclusions:
High blood sugar levels are an important factor in the development of certain types of cancer by causing dysplasia changes in the cells which triggers inflammation in tissues. Although pterjium is benign, it recurs after treatment, and because of the use of antineoplastics in treatment, it is malignant. The effect of diabetes on pterjium was investigated, but the histopathological effect of diabetes on pterjium was not found.Ä°n larger case series are needed to arrive at a conclusion .
