Rose-K lenses in keratoconus, our experience in Oman

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Aim: To describe the initial lens selection of Rose-K (RK) lens and our experience in fitting them in Keratoconus (KC) amongst Omani eyes.

Setting:

Armed Forces Hosptial, Muscat , OmanPeriod of Rose K contact Lenses Fitting from the year 2010 to 2016

Methods:

720 eyes with varying grades of KC (mild: <48D moderate: 48 �â�€�“ 53D, severe: > 53D) were included in the study.Other ecstatic corneal diseases such as atypical KC, keratoglobus, PMD etc were excluded. Patients were fitted with RK lenses with diameter ranging from 8.7 mm to 11.4 mm based on Average simK (Av simK) obtained by corneal topographer (Nidek corneal topographer).RK lens selection depended on the stage of KC, mild KC were fitted with larger diameter and severe cases with smaller diameter lenses. Edge lift was decided based on the fluorescein pattern.

Results:

A total of 720 eyes of 658 patients were fitted with RK lenses. 660 eyes (91.66%) had bilateral disease. A male preponderance was noted in the study (54.54%). Average age of the patients was 17 years. Significant reduction in the chair time and number trials were noted and patient acceptance was better. Selection of the Base curve was based on Av simK values on the axial map and this alone could give accurate fitting of the contact lenses in majority of the cases (r = �.9957, p < 0.00001).

Conclusions:

Selection of the base curve of the initial trial lens was based on the Av simK values on the axial map and this alone could reduce the complexity and chair time of fitting RK lenses in cases of KC.
