Abstract Details
Purpose:
To achieve high visual acuity and comfort in patients with moderate to high degree astigmatism using Rigid Gas-permeable Scleral contact lenses. These lenses have to be customized on individual basis and their design makes them comfortable and easy to use. They can be used not only in keratoconic patients but as well in patients after cornea transplantation or other surgical intervention on the eye.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Tbilisi State Medical University, Eye Clinic Akhali Mzera Ltd, Tbilisi, Georgia
Methods:
We have used Scleral Rigid Contact Lenses for 103 eyes of 65 patients. Besides routine ophthalmological examination, corneal topography and ultrasound pachymetry were done. Uncorrected visual acuity was 0,1-0,3; best corrected VA with glasses was 0,3-0,5. The 28 patients were non-tolerant rigid corneal contact lens wearers, the others had the experience of using soft contact lenses.
Results:
The follow up period was 3 years. Despite the fact of wearing lenses for 14-15 hours daily, biomicroscopy exam showed no episcleral vessel dilatation and the cornea was absolutely avascular. It is important that nearly all patients had high visual acuity with the good quality of vision.
Conclusions:
Modern rigid oxygen-permeable contact lenses are absolutely safe and they can improve quality of life of patients with moderate to high degree astigmatism.
