Abstract Details
Purpose:
We aimed to compare serum endocan levels in retinal vein occlusion (RVO) patients and control subjects.
Setting:
Ahi Evran University Medical School Training and Research Hospital
Methods:
This study was conducted on 25 RVO patients, consisting of 5 central retinal vein occlusion and 20 branch retinal vein occlusion cases, and 28 control subjects as a cross-sectional case control study. Serum endocan levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
Results:
The mean age, gender distribution and body mass index were similar in the two groups with no significant difference (p>0.05). Serum endocan levels were 14.69Â±5.73 ng/mL in the RVO patients and 16.95Â±5.07 ng/mL in the control group (p=0.134).
Conclusions:
There was no significant difference between RVO patients and control subjects for serum endocan levels. Further studies evaluating vitreus endocan and vascular endothelial growth factor levels are needed to investigate the pathophysiological role of endocan in RVO pathogenesis.
