Dacryolithiasis in patient with recurrent dacryocystitis: an often underdiagnosed disorder

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present a case of recurrent dacryocystitis, in which a dacryolith was found.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, ''Hippokrateion'' General Hospital of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece

Methods:

A 37 year-old female patient presented in the emergency department complaining of swelling and pain of her left eye for five days. An abscess had been formed on the left medial canthus. She was already in antibiotic treatment per os for three days. She mentioned two more episodes of dacryocystitis during the past three months.

Results:

Intravenous and topical antibiotics were administered. Incision and drainage of the abscess was performed after two days. After seven days of treatment the patient was discharged. However, two weeks later the inflammation recurred, so the patient was referred to a specialist in oculoplastic. Dacryocystorhinostomy was performed and a dacryolith was removed from the patient�â�€�™s left lacrimal sack.

Conclusions:

Dacryolithiasis is an often underdiagnosed disorder, which is associated with recurrent dacryocystitis. Patients with multiple episodes of dacryocystitis should be examined for dacryoliths and treated appropriately.
