Optic nerve atrophy treatment with autologous bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells

Abstract Details
Purpose:
Total optic nerve atrophy induced blindness is permanent. Autologus stem cell transplantation may be the treatment for this pathology. Case report.
Setting:
Oncology scientific research hospital. Tbilisi; Georgia
Methods:
One patient, male 26 years, with OU total optic nerve atrophy for 20 years (Ou NLP), post rubella (german measles) neuritis, received autologous mesenchymal stem cell transplantation. Simultaneously cells were transplanted intravenously, OU by intravitreal injection, Od in optic nerve and Os parabulbar injection was made.
Results:
5 days after transplantation appeared Os direct pupil reaction, after 1 month light perception on both eyes, wich is perceived for 7 month. Second transplantation is planning.
Conclusions:
Autologous mesenchymal stem cells may be good option for optic nerve atrophy treatment. Further research is needed.
