Purpose:
Introduction: there is insufficient information about correlation between hearing and visual impairments. Its importance arises when trainers or doctors should care about learning/medical issues of their clients. This study aimed to determine the relationship between hearing loss and refractive disorders admitted to Vali e Asr hospital in Birjand 2015.
Setting:
This study aimed to determine the relationship between hearing loss and refractive disorders admitted to Vali e Asr hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Birjand University of Medical Sciencesin 2015.
Methods:
Introduction: there is insufficient information about correlation between hearing and visual impairments. Its importance arises when trainers or doctors should care about learning/medical issues of their clients. This study aimed to determine the relationship between hearing loss and refractive disorders admitted toVali e Asr hospital in Birjand 2015.
Results:
overall 241 patients were enrolled (case n=124, control n=117). Gender distribution showed that there are 51.6% women in case and 54.7% women in control groups (p=0.7). Mean age in case and control groups was 36.03�Â�±17.13 and 35.95�Â�±18.22 years old respectively (t=0.03, p=0.9). Frequency of refractive disorders (in both eyes) were similar in both groups (36.3% in case vs. 38.5% in control, p=0.7). Comparing the refractive disorders type in right and left eyes (separately) between two groups showed that although, there is higher prevalence of myopia in case group, there is no significant relation (p = 0.3 ).
Conclusions:
This study aimed to determine the relationship between hearing loss and refractive disorders based on a case control study. The results showed that the prevalence of refractive disorders is higher in patients with hearing loss however the relation is not significant.Key Words: refractive disorders, visual impairment, hearing loss, hearing impairment
