Treatment of epithelial ingrowth in ReLEx SMILE by YAG laser: case report

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe a method for eliminating epithelial ingrowth by YAG laser

Setting:

Oogkliniek Brugge, Belgian Ocular Laser Center, private center

Methods:

Our patient developped epithelial ingrowth in the RE 6 weeks after uneventful Relex SMILE surgery. Since epithelial ingrowth progressed after checkup of 2 weeks we decided to perform YAG laser treatment of this zone.

Results:

We placed YAG laser spots on the epithelial sheet, untill microbubbles of plasma appeared. After 2 sessions of YAG laser treatment (20 and 24 spots @ 0.6mJ) the ingrowth regressed completely. After 6 months only a faint interface haze remains in the treated zone.

Conclusions:

The YAG laser treatment was succesful in eliminating the epithelial ingrowth. By our knowledge, this is the first time this treatment is described after SMILE surgery.
