Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate intraoperative and postoperative complications of small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in the treatment of myopia

Setting:

Beyoglu Eye Training and Reserach Hospital

Methods:

Two hundreds eighteen eyes of 122 patients who performed SMILE January 2012 to January 2016 for myopia included this study. All patients records reviewed retrospectively. Intraoperative complications (such as opaque bubble layer, suction loss, side cut abrasion-tear, lenticule loss and cap tear) and postoperative complications (such as corneal ectasia, diffuse lamellar keratitis, intrastromal metallic particles) evaluated.

Results:

Severe opaque bubble layer (OBL) had occurred in 7 eyes. Suction loss and intrastromal metallic particles observed in 4 eyes. Most observed complication, side cut abrasion-tear occurred in 9 eyes. No sight-threatening complications occured in our study. None of the patients exhibited corneal ectasia in the follow-up period.

Conclusions:

SMILE is the one of the myopia treatment options with low complication rates.
