Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the corneal morphology after ReLex SMILE in low, medium, high myopia and myopic astigmatism with Swept Source optical coherence tomography (SS OCT) images.

Setting:

University Hospital of Lordâ€™s Transfiguration, partner of Karol Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences in Poznan

Methods:

Assessment of 100 eyes from 50 patients with myopia ranging from -1D to -10D and myopic astigmatism from -0.25 to -5D was performed preoperatively, 1 day, 7 days, 2 and 6 months after SMILE surgery. All SMILE procedures were performed by the same surgeon with the same laser parameters (energy-index 28~140nJ, spot distance -4,5 Âµm â€“ lenticule, cap; spot distance 2 Âµm - side cut) using VisuMax 500 kHz femtosecond laser. Each patient underwent corneal SS OCT in 12 meridians of 6mm width using 3D DRI OCT Triton, Topcon preoperatively and postoperatively 1 day, 7 days, 2 and 6 months

Results:

Elevated cap thickness caused by swelling and inflammatory infiltration was gradually decreasing from day 1 to 6 months after surgery.Gradually decreasing of reflex interface intensity from day 1 to 6 months after surgery.Bowman layer distortion after high myopia correction.Bowman layer distortion after cap creation of 110Âµm thickness

Conclusions:

Gradually decreasing of cap thickness and reflex interface intensity from day 1 to 6 months after surgery is associated with improving refractive outcomes after SMILE surgery. Corneal caps of SMILE are characterized by a good predictability and uniformity.Above evaluation show great SS OCT usability in cornea imaging and monitoring after SMILE surgery.
