Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the AngioVueÂ®/RTVueÂ® spectral optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and LenstarÂ® optical low coherence reflectometry (OLCR) devices in terms of measuring central corneal thickness (CCT).
Setting:
Ophthalmology Dept., Hospital de Santa Maria, Lisboa, PT.
Methods:
Cross-sectional study. Sixty eyes of 30 patients were included. An experienced observer obtained measurements of CCT by using SD-OCT and OLCR. Measurements were performed in the same room, at the same time of the day for each patient. Only images with high-quality acquisition signal were considered. The tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki were followed. A paired t-test was used to compare both measurements. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA 13.1.
Results:
Studied population included 30 subjects (14 women), with a mean age of 28.8 Â± 4.2 [range 22-37] years and a spherical equivalent of -1.7 Â± 1.5 diopters. Mean OLCR right and left eye CCT measurements were 535.9 Â± 8.0 Î¼m and 538.5 Â± 7.9 Î¼m, respectively. Mean SD-OCT right and left eye CCT measurements were 518.6 Â± 7.7 Î¼m and 521.9 Â± 7.9 Î¼m, respectively. The paired t-test analysis found a statistically significant change between OLCR and SD-OCT measurements for both eyes (p < 0.001).
Conclusions:
In our sample, the CCT measurements obtained with OLCR were significantly higher than those obtained with the SD-OCT. The difference between means was higher than 10 Î¼m. These results should trigger furthers research, such as repeatability and reproducibility studies, to better elucidate how these differences may affect clinical decisions.
