Comparisons of anterior segment parameters in delayed mustard gas keratopathy (DMGK) and keratoconus (KCN) patients by Pentacam Scheimpflug tomography

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Since, the results of our previous study showed corneal biomechanical in DMGK and KCN were similar to each other by Corvis ST, we performed this study to compare the anterior and posterior corneal surface parameters in severe DMGK and severe KCN by Pentacam Scheimpflug tomography.

Setting:

Vision health research center, Tehran, Iran

Methods:

This study included 20 eyes of each groups. DMGK group had not any previous surgery except punctual occlusion. Corneal tomography obtained from the Pentacam HR system. Sixteen parameters evaluated from Belin/Ambrosio Enhanced Ectasia and corneal densitometry maps indices of two groups.

Results:

Interestingly, in DMGK, superior steepening (65%) and in KCN, inferior steepening (80%) were more common patterns. The mean of all evaluated rings and layers of corneal densitometry indices (8 parameters), progression index max and thinnest location were more in DMGK group (p<0.001, p=0.006 , p<0.001). Also, front elevation at thinnest location, Ambrosio relational thickness and maximum keratometry (front) in severe KCN were significantly higher than severe DMGK (p<0.001, p=0.016, p<0.001). In other parameters including progression index min, progression index average and back elevation at thinnest location there are not any statistically significant difference between groups.

Conclusions:

Topography pattern, corneal densitometry, progression index max, thinnest location, front elevation at thinnest location, Ambrosio relational thickness and maximum keratometry (front) were significantly different in two groups. It is a primary research and need more study.
