Abstract Details

Purpose:

To know the effect of Cyclophotocoagulation (CPC) in reducing the intra ocular pressure (IOP) of absolute glaucoma.

Setting:

Armed Forces Hospital, Al Khoudh, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

Methods:

28 cases of absolute glaucoma due to various aetiologies under went CPC in the base hospital. All patients underwent the procedure under peribulbar block. An 810nm diode laser was used with a power range between 1.25 W to 2 W for a duration of 3 secs. Power was titrated based on the audible click and thereafter reduced by 50mw. Post op follow up was done at 1 week, 4 weeks and 16 weeks after the procedure.

Results:

Mean age of presentation was 60 years. Absolute glaucoma secondary to primary open angles constituted for majority of the cases (28.57%) whereas central retinal vein occlusion and proliferative diabetic retinopathy constituted the second most common cause (26.32% each). IOP reduction ranged between 8 to 43 mm Hg with a mean reduction of 22.36 mm Hg (48.32%, p < 0.001) in 25 cases at the end of 16 weeks. Average time required for reduction of IOP was 7 weeks. Pressure remained unchanged in 3 cases which required repetition. Patients tolerated the procedure well with minimum post operative complications.

Conclusions:

CPC is a safe and effective procedure in cases of end stage glaucoma with minimum side effects.
