Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate rate of progression (RoP) in treated patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).
Setting:
Dept Ophthalmology, Medical University, Plovdiv, Bulgaria
Methods:
Fifty six eyes of 30 glaucoma patients (11 male and 19 female, with mean age in the beginning of the follow up 58.9 Â± 9.9 years) were enrolled in this study. Using Humphrey field analyzer (program 30-2) the visual field progression rates were calculated as slopes of mean deviation (MD) over time. The mean follow up period was 7.31 Â± 2.00 years. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS v. 22.0.
Results:
Mean MD at the start of the study was -10.35Â±8.72dB and MD under -15 dB was observed in 16 eyes (28.6%). Negative slope of MD values showed 30 eyes (55,4%) of 21 patients (70%). There was a positive tail of no progressing of all eyes (44.6%). The mean value of RoP (decibels per year) with negative slope was -0.64Â±0.54 dB (ranging from -0.05 to -2.33dB. RoP was independent of the baseline MD (p=0.624). There was no correlation between RoP and age and between baseline MD and age. Slow progression (RoPâ¤-0.3 dB/year) was found in 11 eyes (20%).
Conclusions:
There was a wide range of progression rates in treated patients with primary open angle glaucoma. We observed no progression and slow progression of disease in 64.6% of cases.
