Retrospective consecutive case review of 8 years of non-penetrating glaucoma surgery outcomes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the outcomes of non-penetrating glaucoma surgery in a high volume single surgeon glaucoma practice

Setting:

Private Sub-specialty Clinic - Clarity Eye Institute, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Methods:

Retrospective chart review of patients who underwent isolated non-penetrating glaucoma surgery from 2009 to 2016 with at least 1 year of follow-up. The primary endpoints were postoperative IOP and number of medications at 1 year. Secondary endpoints included visual acuity, visual field changes, complications, postoperative interventions, the size of the trabeculo-descemet window and success at 5-years.

Results:

At the time of submission, a sample of 98 eyes had met the inclusion criteria to be included in the preliminary analysis. In this set, the IOP went from 29.4�9.9 mmHg preoperatively to 15.6�4.5 mmHg postoperatively at 1-year (p<0.001). The number of medications reduced from 3.5�1.0 to 0.3 �1.0 (p<0.001) with 83.7% of patient being on no medications. Postoperatively, 68.4% required goniopuncture, 31.6% needling and 11.2% had iris blocking the trabeculo-descemet window requiring removal. No persistent hypotony was reported.

Conclusions:

Non-penetrating glaucoma surgery can significantly reduce IOP and number of medications postoperatively with minimal complications at 1 year.
