Abstract Details

Purpose:

Glaucoma is the main cause of irreversible blindness and intraocular pressure is its only modifiable risk factor. TheÂ importance of robust lowering of Intraocular pressure for prevention of glaucoma onset and progression is well established. The study objective is to investigate the clinical applicability of continuous Intraocular Pressure measurement using Triggerfish Sensor with radio transmission over 24 hours.

Setting:

The study was done at AIKEN, Valencia.

Methods:

In this uncontrolled open trial involving 15 patients, a prototype ocular telemetry Sensor (SENSIMED Triggerfish, Lausanne, Switzerland) and an orbital bandage containing a loop antenna were applied and connected to a portable recorder. Best-corrected visual acuity and position, surface wetting ability, and mobility of the Sensor were assessed after 5, 30 minutes and 24 hours. After Sensor removal, a full eye examination was repeated and the recorded signal analyzed.

Results:

The mean age of the patients was 54.5Â years, and 65% were female. Main adverse events were blurred vision, conjunctival hyperemia, and superficial punctate keratitis . Overall correlation between the 2 sessions was 0.59 (0.51 for no glaucoma medication and 0.63 for glaucoma medication).

Conclusions:

Recent studies suggest that 24 hour continuous monitoring of IOP can be integrated into clinical practice and have the potential to contribute to the reduction of glaucoma-related vision loss.
