Evaluation of choroidal thickness using enhanced depth optical coherence tomography in pseudoexfoliative glaucoma

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the macular choroidal thickness in eyes with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (XFG) with fellow normal eyes in the same patients using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT). Goktas et al have found that the macular choroidal thickness in this patients is lower than that of healthy eyes.

Methods:
The analysis included a prospective study of 12 patients with unilateral XFG and fellow eyes with no glaucomatous criteria. EDI-OCT scans were obtained and subfoveal choroidal thickness was measured perpendicularly (from the outer edge of the hyperreflective retinal pigment epithelium to the inner sclera) on both eyes. The average choroidal thickness of the XFG eyes was compared to that of the fellow eyes.
Results:
Mean age group was 73 �Â�± 7,49 years and 91.7% of the patients were male (n = 11) and 8.3% female (n = 1). The mean subfoveal choroidal thickness was 237,83 �Â�± 88,74�Â�µm in the XFG eyes and 264,16 �Â�± 76,58�Â�µm in the non glaucomatous eyes. Comparison of the choroidal thickness between XFG eyes and fellow eyes was -26,33 �Â�± 49,54 �Â�µm. However this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.093).
Conclusions:
In conclusion, the macular choroidal thicknesses measured by EDI-OCT in this study were found to be thinner in the subjects with XFG but the difference was not statistical significant. Further studies with larger number of patients are needed.
