Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the femtosecond laser created - clear corneal incisions (CCI) with different profile and tunnel length on porcine eyes.

Setting:

S.N. Fyodorovâ€™s Eye Microsurgery Complex, Saint-Petersburg, Russia. Saint- Petersburgs Multi-field Hospital â„– 2, Russia.

Methods:

The Seidel test of wound leakage performed in 35 porcine eyes to evaluate stability of CCIs created with femtosecond laser Â«VictusÂ». The width 2400 Î¼m of incisions was the same in all cases. In single-plane group (10 samples) 3 eyes have got 1250 Î¼m incision tunnel length, 3 eyes 1580 Î¼m and 4 eyes 1800 Î¼m; in two-plane group (12 samples) - 4 eyes 1225 Î¼m, 4eyes 1582 Î¼m and 4eyes 1797Î¼m; in three- plane group(13 samples) - 4 eyes 1240 Î¼m, 5 eyes 1552 Î¼m and 4 eyes 1786 Î¼m. Ophthalmodynamometer was used to simulate compression effect (10-60g).

Results:

The obtained results show that increasing the length and profile of the tunnel improves its tightness properties. The three-plane incisions with a length of 1552 and 1786 Î¼m showed a better stability to self-seal. Single-plane tunnel incisions are less stable in comparison with multi-plane. In single-plane group CCIs with maximum length 1800 Î¼m were characterized by reliable tightness.

Conclusions:

Results indicate that the two- and three- plane CCIs with tunnel length 1500-Î¼m (1.5 mm) or more provide advantageous architecture for reliable self-sealing. Femtosecond laser is a promising direction to create precise parameters of the cut.
