Efficacy of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) in hard cataracts

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the efficacy and safety of FLACS in hard (brown and black) cataracts

Setting:

Centre for Sight, Hyderabad

Methods:

Results of 36 cases of brown and black cataracts who underwent FLACS and compared with 48 cases of hard cataracts which underwent conventional phacoemulsification surgery.

Results:

In case of FLACS, the surgery could be successfully completed in all cases.The cornea was clear in 28 cases (77.7%) on first postop day and in all cases (100%) at 1 week. There was one case (2.8%) of capsulorrhexis extension and PC break. In case of conventional phaco, as high as 12 cases (25%) had to be converted to extracapsular cataract surgery midway during the surgery. Only 8 cases (16.7%) showed clear cornea on first postop day and 14 cases (29.1%) were showing some corneal edema at one week. 8 eyes (16.7%) had a PC break.

Conclusions:

FLACS is a much superior and safer surgical procedure in cases of hard and very hard cataracts.
