Review of visual outcome between femtosecond LASIK and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE)

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual and refractive outcome between Femtosecond LASIK and SMILE in terms of visual acuity, safety, efficacy index, dry eyes, pain and patient satisfaction

Setting:

This study was conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology, Zulekha hospital Sharjah (UAE).

Methods:

This clinical study which includes patients of myopia with and without astigmatism was divided in two groups. Each group of 50 patients were assigned to FemtoLASIK and SMILE. The principal outcome measures were visual acuity, pain, patient satisfaction and dry eyes.

Results:

Postoperative results were compared in both groups in terms of the criteria of improvement of visual acuity, safety efficacy index, dry eyes, pain and patient satisfaction. Postoperative visual acuity in SMILE was better (p=0.004) then Femto LASIK. There was a lower incidence of dry eyes in SMILE group as compared to Femto LASIK group with p value <0.001. 15% SMILE patients and 60% Femto LASIK patients have mild glare post operatively. Most of the patients have good quality of vision in both groups. Safety and efficacy index are same in both the groups.

Conclusions:

The visual outcome and patient comfort was better in SMILE as compared to Femto LASIK group. The patients of SMILE group had less dry eyes as compared to Femto LASIK group.
