Abstract Details
Purpose:
Estimation of functional results after SMILE operation using VisuMax femtosecond laser (Carl Zeiss Meditec) in the eyes with myopia and myopic astigmatism in case of vacuum loss during operation.
Setting:
IRTC Eye Microsurgery Ekaterinburg Center, Ekaterinburg, Russia
Methods:
Among the total number of 2317 SMILE operations performed in our clinic vacuum loss occurred in 3 eyes of 3 patients (0.13%). In 2 cases vacuum loss was caused by conjunctiva suction beneath the Treatment Pack interface, in 1 case �� by poor communication with a foreign patient. In 1 case vacuum loss occurred during posterior lenticule surface formation, in one �� during anterior surface formation and in 1 �� during lenticule edge formation. SMILE operation was continued by repeated vacuum application, complete femtodissection and lenticule removal through a microincision.
Results:
In the studied group, UCVA was 0.05 �Â�± 0.04 before surgery and 0.9 �Â�± 0.09 at day 1 after surgery (p<0.05). Spherical equivalent (SE) was -4.83 �Â�± 2.57D before surgery and 0 D at day 1 after surgery (p<0.05. BCVA was 1.0 before surgery and 0.9 �Â�± 0.09 at day 1 after surgery (p>0.05).
Conclusions:
SMILE operation with vacuum loss at different steps of cornea femtodissection may be completed successfully by repeated vacuum application, complete femtodissection and lenticule removal through a microincision with good functional results.
