Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the predictability, efficacy, stability and safety as well as the quality of vision after SMILE for correction of mild to moderate myopia with or without astigmatism.

Setting:

Centre for Sight Ltd., Hyderabad, India, a tertiary care super-specialty eye hospital.

Methods:

A retrospective analysis of 152 eyes (76 patients) of mean age of 25.24Â±1.89 years, having a mean spherical equivalent of -3.89 Â± -1.89 diopters and a mean cylinder of -1.05 Â± -0.89 diopters, who underwent SMILE at our centre using Zeiss Visumax femtosecond laser. Various parameters studied included refraction, unaided and best corrected visual acuity, low contrast visual acuity, mesopic acuity, tear film function tests, topography, and higher order aberrations. Subjective visual complaints were also analysed.

Results:

134 (88.2%) eyes at 1 week, 141 (92.76%) at 1 month and 146 (96.1%) eyes at 6 months had an unaided acuity of >6/6. 144 (94.7%) had a best corrected mesopic vision of >6/6. and 138 (90.7%) eyes had a low contrast acuity of >0.1. A mean of 0.298Â±0.10 um of higher order aberrations were present at 3 months.16 (21.05%) patients complained of glare at 1 week while only 11 (14.4%) patients had glare at 3 months.82 (53.94%) eyes at 1 month were having abnormal tear film function while at 6 months this number had reduced to 14(9.2%)

Conclusions:

SMILE is a very effective, preductable and safe procedure for correction of mild to moderate myopia with ot without astigmatism. The quality of vision attained after this procedure is very good and ocular surface changes induced by the procedure are totally reversed by 6 months post op in most of the cases. The patient satisfaction rate after this procedure is very high.
