Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of this study was to compare the impacts on the mean depth of the demarcation line (DDL) due to the utilization of hypotonic and izotonic riboflavin in accelerated corneal cross-linking (CXL).

Setting:

Prospectif, cross-sectional study, Ankara Numune Research and Training Hospital

Methods:

Thirty eight eyes of 26 patients were included in this study where accelerated CXL was applied to all patients due to progressive keratoconus. When the corneal epithelium was remove seventeen eyes of 12 patients with corneal thickness below 400 Âµm were categorized as group 1, and 21 eyes of 14 patients with corneal thickness above 400 Âµm as group 2. Hypotonic riboflavin was applied to the group 1 patients whereas, isotonic riboflavin group 2 patients underwent hypotonic riboflavin. All patients underwent anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) by two independent observers at the end of the first and third months.

Results:

Group 1 was comprised of 5 male and 7 female patients with an average age of 25.1Â± 8.02 year whereas group 2 included 7 male and 7 female patients with an average age of 31.8Â±10.12 year. At the end the first month the mean depth of the demarcation line (DDL) in group 1 and group 2 were 180.32Â±10.26 Âµm and 287.21Â±15.01 respectively. The difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). By means of riboflavin application, we observed a correlation between the measured corneal thickness after its saturation and demarcation line.

Conclusions:

Utilizing hypotonic riboflavin in swelling cornea cases results in up front occurrence of post CXL demarcation line of corneal stroma
