Keratometry as predictive value in topography-guided PRK and CXL in keratoconus eyes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study if preoperative keratometric value could be used as a predictive parameter to estimate visual outcomes in topography guided PRK and Crosslinking in Keratoconus eyes

Setting:

Multicenter Study (Vancouver, Sydney, Zurich)

Methods:

Retrospective case analysis of preoperative mean Keratometry (meanK) values of Pentacam (Oculus) and 12 months postoperative values of uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best corrected visual acuity were performed. Correlation analysis between meanK and UCVA and meanK and BCVA were performed. Cases were divided into 3 groups: meanK<45.34=flat K), meanK between 45,87D and 47,96D (=medium K) and meanK> 48,90D (=steep K) and ANOVA test was used to find any differences between the groups.

Results:

56 eyes were included into analysis of UCVA and 62 in BCVA. Significant correlation between meanK and UCVA and BCVA was found (r=0.36, p=0.01 and r=0.31, p=0.01, respectively). Flat K group reached average postoperative UCVA of 20/29 (SD 8 letters), medium K group 20/45 (SD 11 letters) and steep K group of 20/50 (SD 14 letters. Flat K group reached average postoperative BCVA of 20/23 (SD 3 letters), medium K 20/28 (SD 8 letters) and steep K 20/30 (SD 7 letters).

Conclusions:

In topography guided PRK and CXL, flatter preop corneas give better and more consistent postop UVCA and BCVA.
