Iontophoretic collagen cross-linking for ectasia after LASIK and photorefractive keratectomy: long-term results

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the long-term results of iontophoretic collagen crosslinking (I-CXL) in ectasia after LASIK and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

Setting:

Oftaprof Clinic, Iasi, Romania

Methods:

Twelve eyes of 9 patients (7male, 2 female) with postoperative ectasia after LASIK ( 8 eyes) and PRK (4 eyes) were included. The mean age at the time of treatment was of 33 �Â�± 6 years and the mean follow-up was of 27 months (range, 12-47 months). The main outcome measures were uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, spherical and cylindrical refractions, maximum and minimum keratometry readings (Kmax and Kmin, respectively).

Results:

The UDVA and CDVA improved significantly, from 0.58 �Â�± 0.44 logMAR to 0.49 �Â�± 0.36 logMAR (P<0.05) and from 0.21�Â�± 0.23 logMAR to 0.17 �Â�± 0.13 logMAR, respectively (P<0.05). No eye lost 1 or more Snellen lines of UDVA or CDVA. The mean spherical and the mean cylindrical refraction decreased significantly at the last visit (P<0.05). The maximum K value decreased from 47.2 �Â�± 4.4 diopters (D) at baseline to 46.3 �Â�± 4.8 D at the last visit (P<0.05). The minimum keratomery was not significantly different at the last visit. No adverse events were found in any patient.

Conclusions:

Iontophoretic collagen crosslinking yielded long-term stability in cases with corneal ectasia after LASIK and PRK without significant side effects. Improvements in visual acuity, cylindrical refraction, and maximum keratometry values occurred.
