Clinical results of repeated corneal collagen cross-linking in progressive keratoconus

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effectiveness of repeated corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) in eyes with progressive keratoconus after primary CXL.

Setting:

-

Methods:

Twelve eyes of 10 patients who underwent repeated CXL were included in this study. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA), corneal tomography were performed before and after repeated CXL. All cases were treated with CXL for a second time with a minimum 7 months interval when a disease progression was noted. Common risk factors for progression were recorded.

Results:

The mean age of the patients was 23.41�Â�±6.17 (14-34). The preoperative K max value was > 58.0 D in 11 eyes (61.44�Â�±4.76 D). Repeated CXL was performed with a mean interval of 19.33 months after the first CXL procedure when a disease progression of 2.33 D on average in K max was detected. With a mean follow-up of 24.66 months, K max regressed in 9 eyes and remained stable in 3 eyes after repeated CXL. Uncorrected and corrected visual acuity remained unchanged. Eye rubbing was detected in 6 patients. No complications were observed.

Conclusions:

Repeated CXL seems to be safe and effective in stabilizing keratectasia progression after failure of primary CXL.
