Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the quality of corneal grafts performed using several different incision methods with an FSL.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Dokkyo Medical University, Tochigi, Japan.
Methods:
Corneal incisions were performed on eye bank eyes using various different incision methods with an FSL. Three different patterns were used for the lamellar incisions: a raster pattern (RP), a triple raster pattern (TRP: iFSTM, AMO) and a spiral pattern (SP: VisuMaxTM, Carl Zeiss). Five eye bank eyes were used in each pattern group. The lamellar incision quality was evaluated using an optical coherence tomography microscope (OCTM: Rescan700TM: Carl Zeiss) and a 3D-confocal microscope (3D-CM: LEXT OLS4000TM: Olympus). Surface roughness was evaluated using a ten-point mean roughness measure (RzJIS) with a 3D-CM.
Results:
The SP surface appeared uniform under the OCTM. However, the RP surface appeared different between the horizontal and vertical orientation of the irradiation lie. The TRP surface was the smoothest of all three groups. The RzJIS measure was lowest in the TRP group (mean RzJIS were: 9.53 Â± 0.12 (RP), 5.40 Â± 0.90 (SP), 4.21 Â± 0.28 (TRP)).
Conclusions:
The quality of the lamellar incisions were found to be different based on the irradiation pattern used with an FSL. These results suggest that the quality of corneal surgery using FSL could be improved by developing new irradiation methods.
