Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report result of a case with inferior involvement double-head pterygium undergoing narrow-strip conjunctival graft surgery.
Setting:
Baskent University Faculty of Medicine, Dr Turgut Noyan Adana Research and Training Center, Ophthalmology Department, Adana, Turkey
Methods:
A 68-years-old male patient presented with a pterygium tissue in his right eye showed wide spread on both side and nasally extended to the pupillary margin. Double-head pterygium was excised approximately 3 mm posterior to the limbus. The removed tissues were sent for histopathological examination. 6 mm-wide, 10 mm-length free superior conjunctival autograft was harvested. Conjunctival graft was split vertically into two after excision (3 mm-wide, 10 mm-length). The grafts were then placed on bare scleral beds and sutured interruptedly to the sclera and surrounding conjunctiva.
Results:
No recurrence was noted in the operated eye during the 12 months period.
Conclusions:
Narrow-strip conjunctival autograft appears to be an effective and safe surgical technique for double- head pterygium surgery.
