Abstract Details
Purpose:
Determine patients' satisfaction, dependency on refractive aids and complication rates following KeraRing (Mediphacos, Brazil) implantation for corneal ectasia in a University teaching hospital.
Setting:
The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, UK
Methods:
Retrospective review of patient case notes who received KeraRing implantation for corneal ectasia between July 2013 and Nov 2016. 78 patients received KeraRing insertion between these dates; case notes were available for 52 (66.7%) patients. Documented patient satisfaction and post-operative refractive aids reviewed following implantation. Electronic patient records were also reviewed for cases where paper notes were unavailable to ensure capture of all complications.
Results:
13.46% of patients manage with unaided vision, 25% wear soft contact lens (CL), 26.92% in glasses. No documented comment on visual aids in 34.62%.
67.31% of patients documented as happy or very happy with their outcome, satisfied for 17.31%. 8 (15.38%) documented as unhappy:
- Two not able to tolerate Soft CL
- One feels unchanged but chose to keep KeraRing
- Five rings removed (Two melts in severe atopy patients, one melt and infection due to misuse of rigid CL and two because of no benefit)
Conclusions:
Over the last three years 84.62% of patients receiving KeraRing implantation were satisfied with their surgery. Of these 67.31% were documented as happy or very happy with the outcome. Where data was available 13.46% of patients relied on no correction, 25% were wearing soft CL and 26.92% were in glasses. Small numbers of patients dissatisfied with KeraRing implantation, eight cases in 78 patients implanted (10.26%), five of these resulting in ring removal (6.41% of all cases).
