Abstract Details
Purpose:
To improve corneal healing in recurrence herpetic keratitis with using corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL)
Setting:
Kharkiv National Medical University
Methods:
Eight eyes with recurrence non-healing herpetic keratitis underwent photoactivated riboflavin in corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) with the antiviral treatment (with using aciclovir). The average age was 23Â±4. There were six male and two female. The average duration of the last relapse was 1,5 months. The control group was formed of 11 patients (11 eyes) who received only antiviral therapy. The average time till healing, sizes of the corneal ulceration were assessed by slit lamp and confocal microscopy. The followed period was for one year.
Results:
Reepithelization occurred on 36 Â± 8 days in the CXL group and 58 Â± 11 days in the control group p=0.0001. The corneal ulcers` width and length were bigger in control group. The corneal scarring was less intensive in CXL group. Melting with neovascularization were find in control group, p=0.0001. The quantity of relapses was significantly different. On average there were two times per a year among control patients and any backset in study group, p=0.0001.
Conclusions:
Corneal collagen cross-linking with photoactivated riboflavin improves the corneal healing in stromal recurrence herpetic keratitis with the less density scarring formation. The CXL probably decreases the amount of relapses of the herpetic keratitis.
