Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) 5 year follow-up at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the clinical outcomes and complications during the first 5 years following DMEK surgery.

Setting:

Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH), Shropshire, UK.

Methods:

Retrospective review of clinical notes of patients who undergone DMEK with 5 years post operative follow up at RSH. Data collected from visits at 1,3,6,12,24,60 months post operatively and included: visual acuity, refraction, topography, endothelial cell count, pachymetry and complications.

Results:

38 eyes of 33 patients were included with mean age of 65.89 years(38-87). Preoperative diagnosis was Fuch�â�€�™s endothelial dystrophy in 32 eyes, and in 6 eyes other causes of endothelial failure as Irido Corneal Endothelial syndrome and congenital glaucoma. 8 grafts failed (21%), 5 had repeat DMEK, 2 Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK) and 1 had Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK). 27 out of 30 grafts which survived achieved visual acuity of 6/12 or better(90%).

Conclusions:

DMEK is an efficient procedure to manage corneal endothelial disorders with quick visual rehabilitation.
