Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual and refractive outcomes in keratoconus patients implanted with Progressive Thickness Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments (ICRs).

Setting:

World Eye Hospital Istanbul Turkey

Methods:

Contact lens-intolerant patients (â‰¥18 years) with advanced asymmetric Bow tie or Oval or Pellucid â€“ like keratoconus (Grade I, II and III) underwent implantation with Progressive Thickness Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments ( Keraring AS, Mediphacos Ltda, Brazil). All patients underwent refractive assessment and corneal topography preoperatively and postoperatively, including measurement of uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), mean keratometry (Kmean), spherical equivalent (SE) and cylindrical refraction. The mean follow up was 12Â±1,0 months.

Results:

In this prospective case series, 7 patients (11 eyes) with topographic asymmetric Bow tie , 12 patients (20 eyes) with topographic Oval and 4 patients (8 eyes) Pellucid - like keratoconus were included. The mean age was 22Â±2.2 years. There were improvements postoperatively vs. preoperatively in mean UCVA (0.5Â±0.2 vs 0.05Â±0.01 ), mean BCVA (0.6Â±0.14 vs. 0.24Â±0.2 ) mean cylindrical refraction (-2.25Â±0.2 vs. -5.38Â±0.8 D), and mean SE (-2.24Â±0.42 vs -7.26Â±1.2 D). There was also a reduction in Kmean (45.6 postoperatively vs 53.7 preoperatively).

Conclusions:

Implantation of the Progressive Thickness Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments is an effective and a safe method for the improvement of UCVA and BCVA and corneal topography in advanced asymmetric Bow tie or oval or pellucid â€“ like keratoconic eyes.
