Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate clinical results after the implantation of intracorneal ring segments with an asymmetric thickness profile (ICRS-ATP) in patients with keratoconus.
Setting:
Instituto de Olhos Renato AmbrÃ³sio, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil
Methods:
A retrospective analysis was performed including patients submitted to implantation of ICRS-ATP for keratoconus treatmen with minimal follow up of 6 months. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, LogMAR), distance corrected visual acuity (DCVA, LogMAR), refractive sphere and cylinder, central and maximal keratometry K1 (flatter), K2 (steeper) and Kmax) were included. Corneal total wavefront and pachymetry at the thinnest point were computed from Oculus Pentacam (OCULUS Optikgerate GmbHÂ®, Wetzlar, Germany) preoperatively and at 6 months follow-up.
Results:
A total of 12 eyes of 11 patients were included. Mean age was 22.9Â±6,2 years. Mean UCDA improved from 0.7 (20/100) to 0.42 (20/50),(p=0.016) and mean BCVA improved from 0.27 (20/37) to 0.11 (20/25) (p=0.01). No patient lost DCVA. Mean refractive cylinder decreased from -4.70D to -1,54D(p<.01), with no statistical change in sphere. No significant change was observed in mean K1, while mean steep and maximum keratometry decreased from 49.9D to 46.9D(p=0.01) and from 55.5D to 51.8D(p=0.01). Mean corneal asphericity changed significantly from -0.82 to -0.44(p=0.05). Thinnest point paquimetry did not show a statistically significant change at 6 months follow-up.
Conclusions:
A new ICRS with asymmetric thickness profile is available for keratoconus treatment. The ICRS-ATP was safe and effective for improving visual, refractive and tomographic parameters.
