Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report long-term outcome of Sequential Customized Therapeutic Keratectomy (SCTK) for Salzmann Nodular Degeneration (SND) causing severe visual acuity (VA) reduction.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Dept., Humanitas Research Institute, Rozzano, Milan, Italy

Methods:

Nine eyes of 6 patients (mean age, 69.28 yrs) with SND underwent mechanical pannus removal and SCTK. Mean preoperative VA was 0.64Â±0.89 LogMAR with 3.78 D sph -1.75 D cyl mean correction. Mean pupillary K was 43.29 D and mean pachimetry 562.11Â±59.50Î¼m.

Results:

Seven years after surgery, mean VA was 0.21Â±0.66 LogMAR with .45 D sph -1.85 D cyl mean correction. Mean pupillary K was 42.08 D and mean pachimetry 536.20Â±58.03Î¼m. No patient underwent corneal transplant, and no disease recurrence was observed.

Conclusions:

Seven years after SCTK, eyes showed improved VA and stable refraction. More invasive procedures such as PK or DALK were avoided
