Supra-tenon's excision of pterygium

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate a new technique of supra-tenon's excision (with mini SLET) of Pterygium in a prospective study.

Setting:

Neera Eye Centre, New Delhi, India

Methods:

The neck of Pterygium was split with a no 15 BP blade and care was taken to leave the tenon's intact. Pterygium head was avulsed and Cornea was polished. A small triangular piece of limbal tissue was taken from superior limbus and attached to excision site with fibrin glue. BCL was applied. The patients were followed up on day 1 day 7 and 1 month, 3 month, 6 months and 1 and 2 years intervals.

Results:

25 patients with primary Pterygia were enrolled in the study. All the patients healed without complications. Complete epithelization took 1 week. This was documented with HROCT and it was noticed that healing took place with expansion of Corneal cells. No recurrence was noted at the end of 2 years.

Conclusions:

Supra-tenon's excision with mini SLET appears to be an effective way to treat primary Pterygia. It will work only for primary pterygium because intact tenons is required for the cells to grow.
