Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluate the adaptation in patients with keratoconus, success, failure and possible difficulties in the management of scleral lenses

Setting:

Departament of Cornea And Contact Lenses - Sadalla Amin Ghanem Eye Hospital - Joinville - Santa Catarina - Brazil

Methods:

Prospective analysis of patients who tested scleral contact lenses over a mean period of 2 years at sadalla amin ganhem hospital, joinville santa catarina - brazil. The authors discuss the forms of adaptation and difficulties encountered in the process, as well as the possible complications encountered during the use of scleral lenses.

Results:

Scleral lenses are well tolerated and considered comfortable by most patients. Most of the complications consist of mild and non-serious events such as keratitis and red eye. Satisfactory results regarding visual and functional quality are obtained with the use of these lenses when modern technologies are available in terms of technical material and trained professionals. Numerical and tabulated results are included in the presentation.

Conclusions:

We conclude with the present study that modern scleral lenses offer excellent comfort with excellent visual performance even in cases of irregular corneas and patients who have not tolerated other types of contact lenses. Adaptation of the lens is relatively rapid and well tolerated by the patient. The use and handling, as long as well taught, is learned by users. Adaptation requires more time and dedication from the professional. The release of hapitc was the most difficult requirement.
