Persistent epithelial defect in graft versus host disease resistant to conventional therapy

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report a case of severe dry eye syndrome secondary to Graft vs Host Disease (GvHD), successfully treated with Cacicol eye drops as a combination to standard dry eye medications.

Setting:

Bayindir Hospital, Ankara, Turkey

Methods:

A 51-year-old male presented with redness, blurred vision, pain and photophobia. Conjunctival hyperemia, 3x4 mm persistent epithelial defect (PED) and severe dry eye secondary to GvHD was detected in both eyes despite long term using non preserved artificial tears, autologous serum, topical cyclosporine, oral doxycycline and punctal occlusion with silicone plugs. Cacicol eye drops started as one drop every other day for 3 weeks and continued every 3 days for 8 weeks.

Results:

Complete healing with slight irregularities was observed in 8 weeks with Cacicol one drop every other day.

Conclusions:

One drop of Cacicol every other day seems effective in improving the objective signs and subjective symptoms in GvHD patients resistant to conventional therapy.
