A novel topical therapy for corneal blood staining using deferiprone

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report a case of severe corneal blood staining following post-operative spontaneous hyphaema which improved with topical Deferiprone therapy.

Methods:

Case report

Results:

We report a case of corneal blood staining which developed following spontaneous hyphaema post uneventful trabeculectomy in a patient on dual antiplatelet agents. A conservative watch and wait approach was initially adopted which did not result in any improvement over a period of twelve months. Vision prior to deferiprone therapy was hand movements. Topical Deferiprone (t1/2 2 hours) was instilled at a dosage of 25mg/kg 6 hourly. By 10 months the cornea was clear enough to view the optic disc, which was almost cupped out. Vision improved to 6/75 (ph 6/36). The endothelial cell count was 1455cells/sqmm (contralateral eye 2577cells/sqmm).

Conclusions:

This interesting case shows that Deferiprone is a novel, effective, safe and non-invasive form of treatment for severe corneal blood staining.
