Abstract Details
Purpose:
To describe the epidemiological profile of patients enrolled in the corneal transplant waiting queue at Hospital de Olhos Aparecida, Goias, Brazil
Setting:
Hospital de Olhos Aparecida (HOA) at Aparecida de Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil
Methods:
A retrospective and descriptive study was carried out by reviewing the charts of 138 patients enrolled in the corneal transplantation waiting queue from January 2006 to February 2017. All patients who were enrolled in the corneal transplantation waiting queue in this period were included, both the already operated and the ones that are still waiting for surgery. Patients with incomplete records were excluded. The analyzed variables were: gender, age, indications reason, transplantation's waiting queue enrollment date, waiting time and surgery date. The obtained data were treated by methods of descriptive statistics and revealed in tables and graphs through Microsoft Excel.
Results:
In terms of frequency, 59% were female, 36% in the 60-79 age group, 25% in the 20-39 age group. 66% were transplanted, and 21% of the transplants were performed in 2016. The mean age was 55.32 years. The mean waiting time for a transplantation was 14.67 months and the mean total waiting time (including transplanted and non-transplanted) was 16.1 months . The main indications for corneal transplantation were bullous keratopathy (35%), keratoconus (27%) and opacities (18%), including post-trauma opacity (9%) and post-infection (9%).
Conclusions:
It was verified that the average waiting time for the transplantation (14.67 months) is longer when compared to the national literature. This makes the early rehabilitation of vision more difficult, which has a negative impact on patients' psychosocial well-being. This is the first study to consolidate the reality regarding the waiting time for a corneal transplantation in the interior of Goiás, Brazil.
