Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the average central corneal thickness in a non-glaucomatous Egyptian population sample and to compare it with measurements of other populations

Setting:

Study was carried on patients presenting at 'Bostan Diagnostic Eye Center', Cairo, Egypt

Methods:

A retrospective, observational study on a sample of Egyptian population of 2430 eyes. Age of examined persons ranged from 5 to 60 years, of both males and females, presenting during the period starting January 2012 till December 2016. Full Ophthalmological examination was done to all eyes. Evaluated eyes had a refractive error ranging from -6.00 D to .00 D. Eyes with corneal pathology were excluded from the study. Central corneal thickness was obtained through using non-contact Sirrus corneal topography (CSO, Italy) which is Placido and Scheimpflug based. Data were statistically analyzed

Results:

Average Central Corneal Thickness (CCT) of examined eyes was 539.33 34.59 Âµm. The average CCT in eyes of adults was 538.72 34.94 Âµm and in the children group was 548.17 33.95 Âµm. In eyes belonging to males the average CCT was 540.96 36.01 Âµm while in those belonging to females it was 537.94 33.96 Âµm. In examined right eyes, the average CCT was 539.40 34.99 Âµm and in left eyes it was 539.25 34.92 Âµm.

Conclusions:

In the current study, no significant difference was obtained when comparing values in adult and children's age groups, genders, or right versus left eyes. Our results are numerically higher than those reported in a previous study carried on a Southern Egyptian population. The difference between the two studies can be related to the contact mode used in assessment of CCT in that study. On comparison with other studies, our results were found to be comparable to those of a Cameroonian study, less than the values reported in Saudi and Nigerian populations and higher than those of European (White) individuals.
