Efficacy and safety of a limbal approach phacovitrectomy to treat cataract with asteroid hyalitis (Benson's disease)

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the efficacy and safety of a relatively new surgical modification of facovitrectomy in eyes with asteroid hyalitis (Benson's disease).
Setting:
Department of Diagnostics and Microsurgery of Glaucoma, Medical University, Lublin, Poland
Methods:
This study is a retrospective, noncomparative, interventional case series. Six eyes of six patients with significant cataract and Benson's disease with mean age of 75.6 years were analysed. All 6 eyes underwent a novel surgical technique, i.e., a phacoemulsification with anterior vitrectomy through posterior capsulorexis and intraocular lens (PC IOL) implantation. Main outcome measures were: best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), IOL centration and complications.
Results:
All 6 eyes with cataract and Benson's disease were treated successfully by using a new surgical technique. All cases had a BCVA improvement - 7 Snellen lines in 1 case, 6 Snellen lines in 1 case, 3 Snellen lines in 1 case, 2 Snellen lines in 1 case and 2 Snellen in 2 cases. All eyes had IOP in normal range, central IOL fixation and no post-operative complications (no retina detachment, retina holes, macular oedema or prolonged inflammation) .
Conclusions:
The presented surgical technique seems to be safe and effective in cases of cataract with asteroid hyalitis (Benson's disease).
