Abstract Details

Purpose:

to evaluate whether femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) could be successfully per-formed in eyes with cornea affected by keratoconus or previously undergone hyperopic laser assist-ed in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).

Setting:

Bambino GesÃ¹ IRCCS Childrenâ€™s Hospital, Rome, Italy

Methods:

A 76-year-old female patient with keratoconus (III stage according to Krumeich classification) and a 76-year-old female patient treated in 2005 by hyperopic LASIK assisted by femtosecond laser, both affected by nuclear cataract, underwent FLACS performing the docking by liquid-optic inter-face.

Results:

FLACS was successfully performed in both patients. A weel-centered and circular capsulotomy, as well as nuclear fragmentation were achieved. No complications were recorded. Postoperative Dis-tance Corrected Visual Acuity was respectively 20/25 and 20/20.

Conclusions:

Liquid optic interface in FLACS provides effective treatments also in corneas in which not homo-geneous curvature, irregular thickness and intrastromal interface could appear challenging factors in order to achieve a good docking.
