Abstract Details

Purpose:

Patients who have had a toric IOL implanted need to have its placement monitored for rotation in the first weeks post op. Such monitoring will identify those lenses that have rotated out of position. Surgical re positioning can then be undertaken wherever necessary. The paper sets out the preoperative, peroperative and postoperative steps that ensure that all toric IOLs remain on the correct axis. The paper will show cases where lenses rotated out of axis, how this was identified and how it was corrected.

Setting:

My iClinic is an independent eye hospital in London UK. Approximately 50% of patients receive a toric IOL.

Methods:

IOL choice is based on wavefront analysis and topography. All eyes that would benefit from a toric IOL are given one. Axis placement is determined by topography using an anatomical landmark as a anchor point. Post op alignment is by wavefront analyis which allows identification of any misalignment of the IOL. Significant misalignment is surgically corrected

Results:

Those few patients (exact number will be totaled nearer the meeting but about 3 to 4) whose IOLs rotated had their IOLs successfully and permanently realigned.

Conclusions:

Toric IOLs need to have their placement monitored for a least a few weeks after placement to ensure they have not rotated out of axis.
