Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual and refractive outcomes, and patient satisfaction among three patients who expressed willingness to each be implanted with a bifocal IOL after a complicated surgery in one eye and a trifocal IOL in the fellow eye.

Setting:

To evaluate visual and refractive outcomes, and patient satisfaction among three patients who expressed willingness to each be implanted with a bifocal IOL after a complicated surgery in one eye and a trifocal IOL in the fellow eye.

Methods:

Three patients who underwent femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) with implantation of a bifocal (AT LISAÂ® 802) and trifocal IOL (AT LISAÂ® tri 839MP) in either eye were analyzed postoperatively. Near, intermediate and distance visual acuities, subjective refractions as well as satisfaction outcomes using the Quality of Vision (QOV) questionnaire were evaluated. Informed consent from all three patients to publish and approval by the local ethics committee were obtained prior to the conduct of this case series.

Results:

Patient 1 reported an UDVA of 0.0 in both eyes postoperatively. Patient 2 had an UDVA of 0.22 LogMAR in the right eye (bifocal IOL) and 0.1 in the left (trifocal IOL). Patient 3 had an UDVA of 0.1 LogMAR in the right eye (trifocal IOL) and -0.1 LogMAR in the left (bifocal IOL). Two out of the three patients achieved total spectacle independence for both distance and near. All three patients did not complain of cloudiness, blurriness, distorted images, diplopia, focusing or depth perception difficulties postoperatively. Haloes, photophobia and starbursts were present in 2 patients with varying severity.

Conclusions:

This intraindividual analysis demonstrates that combining a bifocal and trifocal IOL can successfully be used together in achieving high patient satisfaction and an overall good visual outcome.
