Purpose:
This was the eighth annual survey on the practice patterns of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) members in cataract surgery.
Setting:
Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region, Regina, Saskatrchewan, Canada
Methods:
In January 2016, an e-mail with a link to Fluid Surveys was sent from the COS office to its 277 members who had indicated their practice focus to be cataract surgery. Two reminders were sent at 2 weeks intervals. Approval for the survey was obtained from the Regina Qu��Appelle Health Region Ethics Board. All responses were collected anonymously.
Results:
There were 114 responses (41.2%). Respondents performing femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) had increased from 8% in 2014 to 17.4%. The majority of them performed it up to 25% of the time. A checklist prior to cataract surgery was performed by 89.8% of the respondents. Of note a potential error was detected by 45% of them. The most common wound size was 2.2 mm (33.6%), followed by 2.4 mm (25.5%) and 2.75 mm (15.5%). Over 62% of the respondents corrected astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery. A Toric intraocular lens (79.4%) was still their preferred method.
Conclusions:
Over the last eight years we have noticed certain trends in the practice patterns of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society members in cataract surgery. The uptake of FLACS in the last couple of years has been most striking.
