Supraincisional stromal pocket hydration for wound closure in paediatric cataract surgeries

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the safety, efficacy and clinical outcomes of supraincisional stromal pocket hydration technique for clear corneal incision (CCI) apposition in patients undergoing pediatric cataract extraction.
Setting:
Drishti Eye Institute, Dehradun
Methods:
A prospective interventional case series was undertaken to assess wound leak and post-operative outcome in patients undergoing supraincisional pocket hydration for CCI (2.8 mm) apposition in pediatric cataract surgeries. This technique involves creation of an additional supraincisional stromal pocket overlying the main incision, which is then hydrated instead of suturing the CCI.The patients were evaluated for fluid leak, keratometric values and conjunctival congestion at site of CCI.
Results:
The study involved a total of 15 eyes with mean age of 6.9 years (range 1 �� 14 years).No wound leaks were detected in any eye intraoperatively and post operatively. One month postoperatively, no significant change was seen in average keratometric values (p <0.05). Minimal congestion was noted at site of CCI during the post-operative phase.
Conclusions:
Supraincisional stromal pocket hydration of CCI appears to be safe and effective in pediatric cataract surgeries. It not only reduces the incidence of post-operative astigmatism, otherwise seen with sutures, but also eliminates the need for suture management in children.
