Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report the feasibility and outcome of lensectomy and scleral-fixated intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in children with disclocated lens due to Marfan syndrome.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Bern University Hospital, Inselspital, University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland
Methods:
A retrospective case review of all Marfan children with subluxated lens, who underwent lensectomy with scleral-fixated IOL implantation in a tertiary center from January 2012 to February 2017, was conducted. Details of surgery technique, intra- and postoperative complications and outcome were analyzed. The primary outcome measures were final best corrected visual acuity (BVCA) and occurrence of complications.
Results:
A total of 20 eyes of 12 children (5 male, 7 female) with a mean age of 5 years (range 2-10) at time of surgery were included. The mean follow-up time was 20 months (range 4-52). Preoperative visual acuity ranged from 20/160 to 20/40. All eyes underwent lensectomy and scleral-fixated IOL implantation. No intraoperative complications were observed in any of the patients. One eye developed a transient pupillary block on the first postoperative day. At end of follow-up, BVCA was >20/50 in all eyes and >20/32 in 14 eyes (63.6%).
Conclusions:
In our cohort lensectomy with scleral-fixated IOL implantation was feasible, safe and effective for eyes with dislocated lens in children with Marfan syndrome.
