Central corneal thickness and intraocular pressure following primary intraocular lens implantation in children less than 2 years

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the change in central corneal thickness(CCT) and intraocular pressure(IOP)before and after surgery in children less than 2 years undergoing surgery for congenital cataract with primary intraocular lens implantation.

Setting:

Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research,Chandigarh,India

Methods:

Children less than two years who underwent who underwent phacoaspiration with intraocular lens implantation in the paediatric ophthalmic clinic of a tertiary care centre were studied prospectively. A record of the preoperative pachymetry with intraocular pressure (IOP) was made and compared with post operative pachymetry and IOP done at 3,6 and 12 months post surgery. Pachymetry was measured by ultrasonic pachymeter and IOP by handheld perkins applanation tonometer.

Results:

Thirty one patients (Age 3-24 months) were analysed. There were 24 bilateral cases and 7 unilateral. The CCT increased significantly from a preoperative value of 529.84 11.7microns to a postoperative value of 553 15.5microns at one year (p=0.022). The mean increase in CCT was 23.16 microns and in IOP was 2.59 mm of Hg.The change in CCT correlated to the change in IOP at one year (p=.0.011).

Conclusions:

Post cataract surgery the CCT in paediatric eyes increases significantly. CCT values are an important consideration in the measurement of IOP in children undergoing cataract extraction with primary intraocular lens implantation in children less than 2 years.
